Is Apple's MacBook Pro Getting a Makeover?

Could Apple 's (ticker: AAPL ) classic MacBook Pro be getting a facelift after more than four years? That's the plan, according to a new Bloomberg report .

Sources tell Bloomberg that the tech giant is going to take advantage of its signature computer to give overall company sales a boost.

Among the changes are a touch-screen strip that will host the function keys (substituting the typical function key row) and will feature "more powerful and efficient graphics processors" geared at experts, sources tell Bloomberg. The device will also be skinnier overall.

That said, don't expect the new product to make an appearance at Apple 's event set for Sept. 7, one of these sources says.

When Apple 's iPad made its debut in 2010, Apple 's co-founder Steve Jobs said it was a "post-PC" product. However, it appears Macs are still popular among consumers: In the past fiscal year, Mac sales ticked up 6 percent to $25.5 billion. Interestingly, iPad sales only reached $23.2 billion, dipping 23 percent.

Apple research claims consumers take more time to replace iPads — about every three years — versus 18 to 24 months for new iPhones, according to a source. This MacBook Pro overhaul intends to alleviate the issue with a notebook sales uptick.

Aside from a boost from its last earnings report toward the end of July, AAPL' s earnings haven't fluctuated too much this year, up about 2.6 percent.
